5 Most Important Skills You Must Have As a Job Applicant

Having a relevant skills before applying for a job is a step ahead and will give you and edge over other. This is because most employers are no longer after certificate in principle but in practical.

In this article, I’ll be discussing in details the 5 Most Important Skills You Must Have As a Job Applicant. Here i seek to propose most sought after skills that is required in every industry and why a job seeker would risk losing a job opportunity if he/she does not possess these skills.

Having certain skills can boost your resume and leave you with a competitive advantage over fellow applicant applying for your same position in a company or work situation.

Most people can be careless about this and pay very little attention towards this very important aspect of job seeking. So you graduated with probably a first class in Engineering, Medicine, Science, you name it and suppose that any employer is just going to make do with that? Before applying for job opening, you should be able to reflect on the bello questions.

1. Do my skills qualify for what I am applying for? If it does, how do I present these skills to an employer and give him reason why I should be chosen, over thousands?

2. If a lot of other applicants are qualified as I am, how many additional skills do I have on my resume relating to the job that can give me an edge over them?

3. What is my employer interested in? Are they interested in my skill set or experience?

Pondering on these questions would give you a better idea as to what you need do to getting picked over others, even when you are less qualified or skilled. In this article, I am going to demystify the most important skills you need in other not to risk a job opportunity.

For years now, many job applicant in some countries have had the mentality that jobs or contracts are given to people either based on sentiments or connections whereas in actual sense; they were responsible for losing a job opportunity. How can you go to an interview with a polo or snickers, it shows unprofessionalism. Even when you dress well, you criticize the company’s management system, and one would ask; isn’t it the same company you’re trying to work for that you are criticizing?

Most companies or industries have a criteria when recruiting new staffs, some don’t sate it categorical, some do, but they don’t still have it all stated. For instance not all companies would tell you; they require their applicant being certified with Health Safety Certificate (HSE) but off course they all do.

i. Language or International Experience: This is one of the Most Important Skills You Need Have As a Job Applicant.

If you know another language or have any experience with work or volunteering abroad or working with international teams, float it! Work is global now, so many companies work with outsourced teams and understanding different customs and being able to build great reports with people in different cultures, it is extremely valuable.

ii. Excel: Having Excel experience is so highly desired. I spoke with a group of company hiring student straight out of degree programs and they said the one skill they wish student had coming into their role was excel. In the business world it just seem as a basic skill and yet in all my year of schooling, it was never an option for curriculum the reason why excel is such an important skill is so many companies are focused on number, it is not enough to just be driven anymore, you got to be data driven. There is a lot of thing that you could probably be doing more efficiently in your job and tracking data if you knew how to use excel, such as highly none excel hardcore to move away from manual data entry in my job by creating the right spreadsheet and importing them. So I recommend taking a legit introductory course to excel.

iii. People Management: To get that next step up in your career, you may need to have people management on your resume, companies only want to put people in people management positions that have done it before, but then how the heck do we get the experience in the first place? Years ago I interviewed at several companies and each one asked me how do I manage a team? And when I said no, they pretty much ended the interview there. So how do we get around this?

Well first; emphasize any external teams you’ve managed, such as any contractors or consultants.

Second; take initiative to be the trainer for your team when new people join, you learn some great management skills by training others, so when you are asked; have you managed a team? You can say; I personally trained the six (6) new team members we brought on board, it is not the same as managing people but it still sounds pretty damn good.

And third lead an organization or community event or find a way to be a leader on some sort of non-profit or local campaign, it is cool to see what you’re like when you are coaching others and you’re delegating and it will give you some good stories to pull from when you are in the interview.

iv. Project Management: A teams’ effectiveness can live or die at the mercy of great project management, so anyone with exceptional project management skills is an absolute God sent to a team. The goal of project management is ensuring best the possible execution; which means that you set the scope of a project and have clear goals; you have the ability to manage different key stakeholders, you lead effective meetings and hold retrospectives to be constantly reflecting and iterating on the best way to go about things. It is also a plus if you know your way around project management software like asana, Trello and Jirra. Every company I have heard of have use at least one of these tool and probably expected their staffs to be able to use them and for too long they got away with only knowing very basic capabilities but then here’s two things, you can do.

First; take a course on project management, work with project management software and find your way around it, and if you are in the technology field look into learning about Agile and Scrum and then pump those suckers into your resume.

v. Design Skills: If you are in the corporate world, design skills can give you a fantastic edge up on the competition because you won’t always have a professional designer at your disposal and you want your resume, your presentations and your deliverables all to have a level of polish that people associates with your competence.

I work in trainings and human resource and even design was on the job description and even project management was also there.

This stuff really matters, now sometimes you write on your resume that you have design skills, other times you just show it. My best advice for getting up to speed on design quick; is to start creating elements on they have endless templates and is a very easy tool for non designers. I’ve created flyers, proposals, book covers, even my linkedin cover photo on there.
